1. Purpose
This policy explains how waste generated through customer inventory and warehouse handling is managed and charged.
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that the cost of disposing of operational waste generated by individual customers is allocated fairly.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all customers storing or processing goods within the warehouse.
It applies to waste generated during normal warehouse operations including:
- Inbound stock receiving.
- Opening cartons or pallets.
- Product repacking.
- Product inspections.
- Inventory adjustments.
- Kit building or product preparation.
3. Definitions
Operational Waste
Packaging or materials that must be removed and disposed of as a result of handling customer inventory.
Examples include:
- Cardboard cartons.
- Shrink wrap.
- Plastic packaging.
- Protective fillers.
- Damaged packaging materials.
Significant Waste
Waste volumes that exceed normal small packaging removal and require additional disposal handling.
Examples include:
- Full pallets of cardboard.
- Large volumes of plastic wrap.
- Pallets of packaging material removed during inbound processing.
- Bulk packaging removed during repacking.
4. Waste Generation
During warehouse operations it may be necessary to open packaging in order to:
- Verify stock.
- Book inventory into the system.
- Store products efficiently.
- Prepare items for fulfilment.
Where this process generates waste of significant volume, the waste must be removed from the warehouse and disposed of using our waste contractor.
5. Waste Disposal Charges
Where customer stock generates significant waste, the cost of disposal will be charged to the customer responsible for that waste.
Examples include:
- Opening inbound shipments that generate large volumes of cardboard.
- Removal of pallet quantities of packaging.
- Bulk removal of plastic wrap or protective materials.
- Repacking projects that create large volumes of packaging waste.
These charges cover the cost of handling and disposing of the materials through the warehouse waste management provider.
6. Operational Process
When significant waste is generated:
- Warehouse staff will separate the waste from normal inventory.
- The waste will be removed through the warehouse waste disposal process.
- A disposal charge will be applied to the customer account.
- The charge will appear on the customer invoice.
7. Waste Reduction
Customers are encouraged to minimise unnecessary packaging when shipping inventory to the warehouse.
Reducing excess packaging can:
- Lower disposal costs.
- Reduce handling time.
- Improve storage efficiency.
8. Monitoring
Waste volumes generated from inbound shipments and warehouse projects are monitored periodically.
Where repeated waste generation occurs, the operations team may contact the customer to review packaging practices.
